Fundamental
Concepts
These concepts are referred to
frequently in strategies section, so it helps to be familiar with
them before moving on.
- Destroy your enemies' outpost network
early. This way you can prepare your attack with greater privacy.
- Be creative -- but do not let your
enemy overpower you or outnumber you in battle.
- Do not leave your king unguarded.
Fortifications
- When
attacking with ranged units, always wall off at least the
forward part of the square the units are attacking from, to
protect those units and maintain their 25% attack
bonus as well as the enemy's -25%
attack penalty.
- When possible, a wall should be
placed on the slope of the elevation, not at the top of or at the
bottom of the elevation. This will guarantee that your units
attack from a higher plane than the enemy's.
Posture/Formations
- Always be aware of the posture and
formations used by your troops.
- Archers should usually use stand
ground and tight formation when facing enemy stable units or
infantry.
- Archers should always use
staggered formation when facing enemy onagers.
- Archers should always use attack
posture when facing enemy archers.
- Stable units and infantry should
always use defensive posture and a staggered formation when
not engaged. When engaged, switch to attack posture.
- When not engaged, no units should
rest idle on a lower-elevation square at the foot of a
raised-elevation square.
Terms
- Chokepoint
- A narrow gap between walls in a
fortification to allow enemy troops to path inside.
Chokepoints can make it easier for the defender to pick off
enemy units one-by-one as they trickle in.
- Contingent
- A group of 9 of the same unit.
- Diagonal
- A diagonal row of same-color
squares.
- Fortify
- To surround a group of one's units
(on a higher elevation) with palisade or stone walls.
- FOV
- Field of View
- FOW
- Fog of War
- Front Line
- The line of squares or troops from
which battles are usually fought.
- Line
- A row of squares either diagonal
or straight.
- Posture
- The stance (defensive, attack,
stand ground) of a unit.
- "Raised" Elevation
Square
- All units attacking from a higher
elevation receive a 25% attack bonus. All units
attacking from a lower elevation receive a -25%
attack penalty.
- Straight
- A horizontal or vertical row of
different color squares.
